BIOQuébec welcomes the Quebec budget 2017-2018

QUEBEC BUDGET FOR 2017 – 2018

THE QUEBEC GOVERNMENT WILL BE SUPPPORTING ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND THE WELL-BEING OF ITS RESIDENTS THROUGH INNOVATION AND LIFE SCIENCES

BROMONT (Québec) March 28, 2017 – BIOQuébec is celebrating the Québec government’s newly introduced balanced budget for 2017-2018, which contains elements to support the value creation of the biotechnology and life sciences industry.

“The allocation of an additional $834 million dollars to sustain the Stratégie québécoise de recherche et d’innovation between now and 2022 shows the government’s commitment to supporting this growth market in Québec. We are also very pleased that $118 million of the total amount being invested has been earmarked for the Stratégie des sciences de la vie, as it highlights this sector’s socio-economic importance”, states Anie Perraut, Executive Manager of BIOQuébec.

In recent years, BIOQuébec has documented the socio-economic contribution of biotechnology and contract research organizations (CROs), two of the province’s rapidly-developing sub-sectors which have a particularly promising potential for development. The full results of two studies are available on BIOQuébec’s website.

“We look forward to Minister Dominique Anglade’s upcoming release of the Stratégie Recherche et Innovation and of the strategy specific to life sciences, which will provide details on how these credits can be used to increase value creation for the economy, the industry, and the entire population of Québec”, declares Anie Perrault.

Québec is proud to bring together all members of the life sciences innovation chain, from research to marketing.

“Our industry creates wealth and tens of thousands of specialized jobs while spearheading the development of discoveries, diagnostic tests and treatments that save lives every day, around the world”, states Ms. Perrault.

BIOQuébec has been increasing its efforts to make the public aware of the benefits of diagnostic tests and technology developed here, in Québec, and used around the world. The biotechnology and life sciences network’s most recent initiative is the Innovation, it’s in our DNA web-based campaign.

“We are also very pleased that part of the sum allocated to research and innovation, an amount of  $100 million, will be invested in the growing artificial intelligence sector. In the long term, this will have an impact on how healthcare services will be provided and will have a ripple effect on different areas of the life sciences ecosystem”, concludes Ms. Perrault.
