BioTalent Canada Launches the 2017 MAGNUS Catalyst Award for Top New Hire

OTTAWA, December 6, 2016 – BioTalent Canada today announced the launch of the 2017 MAGNUS Catalyst Award for Top New Hire, which is now accepting nominations.  The award, built upon the ‘Catalyst’ Award launched by BioTalent Canada last year, is sponsored by MAGNUS Personnel, and is an initiative to recognize the young employees who have contributed most significantly to their Canadian biotechnology employer in the past year.  The winner will be announced in early Spring 2017, who will be awarded a $1,000 prize.

The award recognizes achievements of participants in the various wage subsidy programs administered by BioTalent Canada throughout 2016, intended to help recent graduates land their first job in biotechnology, and assist biotech employers access funds to hire the talent they need.

"Enhancing access to youth in Canada has been a great advantage for our biotech companies,” said Rob Henderson, President and CEO of BioTalent Canada. “Canadian companies realize that young innovators are shaping Canada’s bio-economy every day.  Some of these young people could be the next Frederick Banting or Wilder Penfield,” he said.

BioTalent Canada has successfully partnered with the federal government in implementing wage-subsidy programs for more than ten years. In 2016-2017, these programs are injecting $3 million in wage subsidy capital into Canada’s bio-economy and will be responsible for providing 300 individuals with their first job.

BioTalent Canada’s initiatives to grow Canada’s biotech workforce were lauded in the 2016 edition of Scientific American Worldview.  According to BioTalent Canada’s labour market report on recent graduates, Opening the Door, 90% of Career Focus wage subsidy program participants remain employed after completing the program.

Welcoming the impact wage subsidies have on the sector and youth employment, talent acquisition company, MAGNUS Personnel, joined BioTalent Canada as award sponsor.

“When we heard about BioTalent Canada’s award, we had to get involved,” said Erik Simins, President and CEO of MAGNUS Personnel. “As a headhunting firm specialized in the Medical, Clinical Research and Life Sciences sectors, we’re seeing first-hand the tremendous value that wage subsidy programs offer to the Bio sector.”

Biotechnology employers are invited to submit applications, detailing their most recent hires through the programs - how these young scientists and entrepreneurs have enhanced innovation, and made substantial contributions to their companies.

The 2017 MAGNUS Catalyst Award will accept entries from employers until January 27, 2017.  Eligible nominees are new graduate employees (within 3 years) who participated in one of BioTalent Canada’s wage subsidy programs in 2016.  Entries will be judged based on significant contributions to: company culture, a company’s sense of innovation, achievement of a team or company business objective and overcoming a business challenge.

Announcement of finalists and the award winner will be in the spring of 2017.
